Lancaster, Fred – Private

Of 123, Ellesmere Street, Farnworth, Lancashire. Formerly 18099, 6th Battalion, Loyal North Lancashire Regiment. Shot through the lung in 1915 and spent 3 months in hospital in Malta and a further 2 years in England. Returned to France in May 1918 with the King’s Liverpool Regiment. Memorial in Farnworth Cemetery.

Lever, James – Corporal

Of 22, Bridge Street, Farnworth, Lancashire. Formerly 22988, Loyal North Lancashire Regiment. Four brothers serving: Arthur (Labour Corps), Fred (Royal Army Service Coprs), W Lever (Royal Field Artillery), and Lance Corporal A. Lever (Lancashire Fusiliers).

Son of Thomas and Betsy Lindsay (nee Brooks); husband of Mary Ellen Lindsay (nee Christie), of 81, Peel Street, Farnworth, Lancashire.  NB. Recorded as Robert on some of the military records.

Marsh, Frederick William – Warrant Officer Class II (Company Sergeant Major)

Son of James William and Elizabeth Ann Marsh, of 12, Co-operative Street, Seedley, Salford, Lancashire. Of 29, Mather Street, Kearsley, Lancashire. DCM Citation: “For conspicuous gallantry and coolness on many occasions, especially during the operations at Givenchy and Cuinchy from the 17th December, 1914, to the 29th January, 1915, when he gave a fine example of courage, resource and cheerfulness at a time when much needed, and of great devotion to duty.” (LG 30.06.15)

Son of John and Julia Morgan, of 22, Nelson Street, Farnworth, Lancashire. Possibly formerly 6th Dragoon Guards. Died in Salonika of malaria and dysentery.

Adopted son of Mr. and Mrs. William Brierley, of 1, Alpine Terrace, Kearsley, Lancashire. Resided at 15, Alpine Terrace, Kearsley, Lancashire.

Oakes, John – Private

Son of John and Hannah Oakes, of 111, Church Road, Kearsley, Lancashire. An old boy of Farnworth Grammar School. Killed when shot in the neck whilst on sentry duty. Memorial in St. John’s Churchyard.

Rixon, John – Private

Husband of Mrs. Rixon, of 10, Ash Street, Moses Gate, Farnworth, Lancashire. Worked as a Fireman for the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Company.
