Originally enlisted at Bolton as Private 20667 in the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment 26/04/1915 and discharged as not likely to become an efficient soldier 28/04/1915. Subsequently re-enlisted at Lower Broughton as 3963, Lancashire Fusiliers in July 1915.

Caught aged 27 as an absentee from Oxted since 02/08/1915 appearing before Bolton Magistrates 24/08/1915 to be sent back to his unit under escort. (Bolton Archives: JBO/1/26).
