Yate, Charles Allix Lavington – Major

Son of the Rev. George Edward Yate, Vicar of Madeley, Shropshire and Prebendary of Hereford; husband of Florence Helena. Brother of Mrs. Robertson, wife of Dr. Robertson, of Bolton, Lancashire. Served in the South African Campaign. VC Citation: Le Cateau, France, 26 August 1914. When in trenches, with all his fellow officers either killed or wounded, and his men out of ammunition, he led a charge of the 19 survivors against the enemy. He was severely wounded and taken prisoner by the Germans, subsequently shot in the back during his third escape attempt at Torgau, near Berlin, Germany.
