Gandy, John – Sergeant

Son of Mrs. Gandy, and the late Mr. Gandy, of 25, Bolton Road, Bolton, Lancashire. Formerly of the Lancashire Fusiliers, served in the South African Campaign. His father served in the Scots Guards during the Crimean War and was present at the siege and capture of Sebastopol. DCM Citation: “For conspicuous gallantry. When in charge of wiring party, heavy rifle and machine gun fire was unexpectedly opened upon them. Lance-Sergeant Gandy withdrew to the trench, and then, finding to men absent, he returned alone, under heavy fire, and brought them in.” (LG 11.03.16)

Husband of Betsy Ellen Pollitt, of 322, St. Helens Road, Daubhill, Bolton, Lancashire. Died March quarter 1919, aged 44. Interred at Heaton Cemetery, 01 March 1919. Cannot find any record of service.
