Son of Charles Frederick and Kathleen Bates, of 2, Canning Street, Bolton, Lancashire; husband of Gertrude Louisa Bates, of 65, Crumpsall Street, Bolton, Lancashire, and formerly of 3, Blackbank Street, Bolton, Lancashire. Formerly employed as a conductor on the Bolton Corporation Tramways. Enlisted April 1915.

Bennison, Richard (Dick) –

Son of Eliza Bennison, of 1, Gilnow Road, Bolton, Lancashire, and formerly of 33, Empress Street, Smithills, Bolton, Lancashire, and the late George Bennison. Formerly employed as a tram conductor by the Bolton Corporation. Enlisted September 1914. Formerly 16117, Loyal North Lancashire Regiment. Wounded 07/07/1916 just below the right knee.

Foster, Lewis –

Son of Thomas and Rachel Foster, of 13, Crosby Road, Bolton, Lancashire; husband of Bessie Hirst Foster, of Brian Hey Bungalow, Montserrat, Bolton, Lancashire, and formerly of 142, Lawn Street, Bolton, Lancashire. Previously employed as a clerk in the Bolton Tramways office. Formerly 8048, Royal Engineers.

Gerrard, Ernest –

Husband of Mrs. Gerrard, of 22, Battenberg Road, Bolton, Lancashire. Worked for ten years a driver on the Dunscar and Farnworth routes for the Bolton Corporation Tramways Department. Enlisted April 1915. A fire broke out close to some ammunition, and in attempting to warn a comrade of the danger, both were caught in the explosion of the ammunition and killed.

Hardman, Francis –

Son of Peter and Sarah Ann Hardman, of 42, Venture Street, Bolton, Lancashire; husband of Sarah Alice Hardman (nee Pickvance), of 215, Lever Street, Bolton, Lancashire, and formerly of 15, Hurst Street, Bolton, Lancashire. Previously a tram driver on the Brownlow Fold route, he went to the front on 01/10/1916, being wounded on 01/12/1917 necessitating amputation of the right arm. His name is on the Roll of Honour at St. Mark’s Church, where he was a Sunday school teacher. Left a wife and child at 28, Rishton Lane, Bolton, Lancashire.

Horrocks, Henry Edward –

Son of Mr. and Mrs. Horrocks, of 26, Cannon Street, Bolton, Lancashire; Husband of Mrs. Horrocks. Formerly employed as a car inspector and cash clerk in the Tramways Offices at Bridgeman Street Car Shed. Reported missing since 14/09/1916 and subsequently presumed killed.

Lamb, Robert –

Husband of Beatrice Annie Lamb, of 100, Lawn Street, Chorley Old Road, Bolton, Lancashire. Enlisted June 1916. Formerly 16 years as a tram conductor.

Mee, Edward –

Son of Walter W. C. and Frances E. Mee, of 27, Henry Street, Bolton, Lancashire. Enlisted September 1914. Formerly employed as a clerk in the Tramways Office. Reported missing since 21/05/1916, and subsequently presumed killed.

Pollitt, Frank –

Son of Rifleman H. Pollitt, Loyal North Lancashire Regiment, and Emma Pollitt, of 618, Blackburn Road, Bolton, Lancashire; husband of Mrs. A. E. Pollittt, of 2, Crumpsall Street, Bolton, Lancashire. Formerly worked as a Conductor on the Bolton Corporation Tramways. Enlisted June 1915.

Priestley, Arthur –

Youngest son of the late Mr. William Priestley, of Deansgate, Bolton, Lancashire; husband of Sarah Ellen Priestley, of 12, Hillside Street, Bolton, Lancashire. Formerly a tram driver for the Bolton Corporation Tramways Department. Enlisted September 1917.

Royse, Fredrick –

Son of Joseph and Ann Royse, of 11, Grecian Street, Bolton, Lancashire. Formerly employed on the tramways. Reported missing since 21/10/1916 and subsequently presumed killed.

Scowcroft, William –

Son of John and Margaret Scowcroft, of 37, John Street, Bolton, Lancashire. Formerly employed as a tram conductor on the Dunscar route.

Shanley, Herbert –

Son of William and Annie Jane Shanley, of 4, Noble Street, Bolton, Lancashire. Enlisted February 1915. Died from gunshot wounds in the thigh at Rouen.

Simmons, Joseph –

Husband of Mrs. Simmons, of 10, Regent Street, Bolton, Lancashire. Served in the South African Campaign. Formerly a Bolton tram driver.

Torkington, Thomas Henry –

Of 7, Devonshire Road, Bolton, Lancashire. “Well known as a car conductor on the Brownlow Fold route, Gunner Thos. H. Torkington (27) is stated by the chaplain to have been killed on April 25th while going to the assistance of two mates who had been buried alive. His mother, Mrs. Mort, lives at 7, Devonshire Street. Torkington met his death just a year from the day he joined the Royal Field Artillery”. (BJ&G: 25.05.17).

Wood, Harry –

Son of the late James and Mary Ann Alice Wood; husband of Emily Louisa Wood (nee Thomas), of 10, Charles Rupert Street, Bolton, Lancashire, formerly of 18, Latham Street, Bolton, Lancashire. Formerly employed as a tramcar conductor for the Bolton Corporation Tramways. Enlisted September 1914. Died from a gunshot wound to the chest.
