A brother, Jack, served in France.

Clegg, Jacob –

Son of the late Thomas and Mary Clegg; husband of Ruth Clegg, of 6, Howard Avenue, Kearsley, Lancashire, formerly of Lever Grove, Bolton, Lancashire. Police Constable 63 of the Bolton County Borough Police prior to being called out for military service on 06/08/1914. (Bolton Archives: ABJ/222/133). Reported missing and later presumed killed.

Hospitalised with serious gunshot wounds to the back and shoulders September 1917.

McKenzie, John –

Son of Malcolm and Agnes McKenzie, of Moor Cottage, Longtown, Cumberland. Police Constable 61 of the Bolton County Borough Police from 30/07/1914 until enlistment for war service. (Bolton Archives: ABJ/22/230). Died from wounds at Frensham Military Hospital, near Farnham, Surrey.

Nield, Charles Henry –

Husband of Rachel Nield, of 176, Lee Avenue, Great Lever, Bolton, Lancashire, and formerly of 45, Howcroft Street, Bolton, Lancashire. Sergeant 17, formerly Police Constable 89 of the Bolton County Borough Police, having joined the force 12/01/1906. (Bolton Archives: ABJ/22/139). A brother also served. Killed by the bursting of a high-explosive shell. Previous service in the South African and Crete Campaigns. Service number recorded as 2381 on CWGC.

Pinch, Bertie –

Son of Thomas and Ellen Pinch, of Dent, Yorkshire; husband of Joanna Pinch (nee Jost), of Weaving Terrace, Dent, Yorkshire, and formerly of 2, Latham Street, Bolton, Lancashire. Previously a tram conductor in Bolton. Served as Police Constable 86 of the Bolton County Borough Police from 07/08/1913 until enlistment for military service. (Bolton Archives: ABJ/22/225). Killed by a shell splinter. His brother Vincent, of Dent, Yorkshire, served as Gunner 74415, Royal Garrison Artillery and survived.

Walmsley, Robert –

Husband of Alice Thurston (formerly Walmsley), of 52, Lyncroft Road, Hale Green, Birmingham, Warwickshire, and formerly of 16, Elmwood Grove, Bolton, Lancashire. Police Constable 182 of the Bolton County Borough Police since 12/05/1911. (Bolton Archives: ABJ/22/187). Died by drowning at Basra, Mesopotamia whilst bathing. Name recorded as Robert WARMSLEY on SDGW.

Wells, Walter –

Son of William and Joyce Wells, of Marton, Rugby, Warwickshire. Police Constable 187 of the Bolton County Borough Police, of 20, Broad-o’th’-Lane, Astley Bridge, Bolton, Lancashire prior to being called out for Army Service 06/08/1914. (Bolton Archives: ABJ/22/203). He was normally resident of Chapen-en-le-Frith, Derbyshire, at the time of his death. Died at Broadwater Hospital, Ipswich and interred with full Military Honours at Ipswich. His brother Stephen also served.
