Rigby, Charles Armour –

Son of Mr and Mrs Charles Rigby, of 402, Manchester Road, Bolton, Lancashire. Formerly employed as a postman at the Farnworth Post Office. Body not recovered for burial.

Rigby, John Thomas –

Husband of Mrs. Rigby, of 17, Back Chorley Street, Bolton, Lancashire. Enlisted September 1914. Reported missing from 23/07/1916, subsequently regarded as killed on that date. A son also served.

Rigby, Bernard –

Son of Thomas and Mary Ellen Rigby, of 123, Davenport Street, Bolton, Lancashire.

Riley, James –

Husband of Louisa Riley, of 29, Coop Street, Astley Bridge, Bolton, Lancashire. A Sergeant of the Bolton Corps of the St. John Ambulance Brigade, which he joined at the start of the South African Campaign. Formerly employed as caretaker of the Co-Operative Society Reading Rooms at Halliwell. Body not recovered for burial.

Riley, John –

Husband of Mary Ellen Riley, of 9, Union Road, Tonge Moor, Bolton, Lancashire, and formerly of 96, Spring Gardens, Bolton, Lancashire. Formerly a fireman of the Bolton County Borough Fire Brigade. Hospitalised in March 1917 by gas poisoning.

Riley, Tom –

Son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Riley, of 27, Parkfield Road, Great Lever, Bolton, Lancashire. Enlisted February 1917. Admitted to a base hospital with wounds in the arms and legs to which he succumbed later the same day.

Riley, William –

Son of Alice Ann Openshaw (formerly Riley), of 11, Seddon Street, Bolton, Lancashire, and the late Joseph Riley, formerly of 9, Walmsley Street, Woolfold, Elton, Lancashire. Wounded 17/07/1916 and died in General Hospital, France.

Rimmer, William –

Son of Alderman William Rimmer and Rebecca Stanley Rimmer (nee Gibbs), of “Wyndene”, New Hall Lane, Bolton, Lancashire. Enlisted August 1914 as a Private in the East Lancashire Field Ambulance, Royal Army Medical Corps. Contracted enteric fever and invalided home. Returned to England December 1916 for training and commissioned 22/07/1917. Died at Langemarck.

Rimmer, Edward –

Son of Frederick Rimmer and Sarah Rimmer, of 87, Millgate, Wigan, Lancashire.

Rimmer, James –

Son of Mr. and Mrs. James Rimmer, of St. Helens, Lancashire; husband of Annie Rimmer, of 4, Telford Street, Brownlow Fold, Bolton, Lancashire, and formerly of 50, Ramwell Street, and 11, Mort Street, Bolton, Lancashire. Caught aged 21 as an absentee from 3rd Bn., Loyal North Lancashire Regiment at Felixstowe since 30/08/1915 and further as a deserter from the same date. Appeared before Bolton Magistrates 18/09/1915 and 02/10/1915 to be sent back to his unit under escort. (Bolton Archives: JBO/1/26).

Ripley, James –

Son of James and Amelia Ripley, of 68, Parliament Street, Bolton, Lancashire. Caught aged 27 as an absentee from Corton Camp, Wiltshire since 21/06/1915 appearing before Bolton Magistrates 25/06/1915 to be sent back to his unit under escort. (Bolton Archives: JBO/1/26). Died resulting from a shrapnel wound to the chest received in Salonika 22/12/1916.

Ripley, Levi –

Son of James and Amelia Ripley, of 68, Parliament Street, Bolton, Lancashire; husband of Elizabeth Ripley (nee Thomasson), of 259, Derby Street, Daubhill, Bolton, Lancashire. Formerly Private 3992, 1st/5th Bn., Loyal North Lancashire Regiment. Reported missing since 26/08/1916 and subsequently confirmed prisoner of war at Lazarette, wounded in the head and hip. Died at Nurnberg, Bayern, Germany, following a fight with a German farmer.

Rippin, James Henry –

Son of Arthur Edward and Eliza Rippin, of 15, Chapel Street, Bolton, Lancashire. Previously employed as a member of the reporting staff of the Bolton Evening News & Bolton Journal and Guardian. Enlisted September 1914. Formerly Lance Corporal 2357, 1st/5th Bn., Loyal North Lancashire Regiment. Wounded 20/06/1915 by gunshot in the right leg. Commissioned 20/12/1915. Died from pneumonia at Prees Heath Military Hospital, Whitchurch. Recorded as 4th Bn. on SDGW.

Husband of Sarah Robb, of 39, Irwell Street, Bury, Lancashire, and formerly of 23, Oakenbottom Road, Breightmet, Bolton, Lancashire. Native of Bolton, Lancashire. Recorded as Louis on church memorial.

Robbie, Robert Nelson –

Son of Robert Nelson Robbie and Isabella Robbie, of 92, Brighton Avenue, Bolton, Lancashire; husband of Muriel Robbie, of 94, Brighton Avenue, Bolton, Lancashire. Formerly employed in the composing room of the Bolton Evening News (Tillotson’). Also reported as “Neil Robbie”. His only brother was wounded in the evacuation of Gallipoli.
