A Sergeant of the Bolton Corps of the St. John Ambulance Brigade, which he joined at the start of the South African Campaign. Formerly employed as caretaker of the Co-Operative Society Reading Rooms at Halliwell. Body not recovered for burial.

Son of Alice Ann Openshaw (formerly Riley), of 11, Seddon Street, Bolton, Lancashire, and the late Joseph Riley, formerly of 9, Walmsley Street, Woolfold, Elton, Lancashire. Wounded 17/07/1916 and died in General Hospital, France.
Rimmer, William –
Son of Alderman William Rimmer and Rebecca Stanley Rimmer (nee Gibbs), of “Wyndene”, New Hall Lane, Bolton, Lancashire. Enlisted August 1914 as a Private in the East Lancashire Field Ambulance, Royal Army Medical Corps. Contracted enteric fever and invalided home. Returned to England December 1916 for training and commissioned 22/07/1917. Died at Langemarck.

Caught aged 21 as an absentee from 3rd Bn., Loyal North Lancashire Regiment at Felixstowe since 30/08/1915 and further as a deserter from the same date. Appeared before Bolton Magistrates 18/09/1915 and 02/10/1915 to be sent back to his unit under escort. (Bolton Archives: JBO/1/26).

Caught aged 27 as an absentee from Corton Camp, Wiltshire since 21/06/1915 appearing before Bolton Magistrates 25/06/1915 to be sent back to his unit under escort. (Bolton Archives: JBO/1/26). Died resulting from a shrapnel wound to the chest received in Salonika 22/12/1916.

Formerly Private 3992, 1st/5th Bn., Loyal North Lancashire Regiment. Reported missing since 26/08/1916 and subsequently confirmed prisoner of war at Lazarette, wounded in the head and hip. Died at Nurnberg, Bayern, Germany, following a fight with a German farmer.

Died from pneumonia at Prees Heath Military Hospital, Whitchurch. Recorded as 4th Bn. on SDGW.
