Only son of Ernest Nightingale and Martha Annie Cooper (nee Briercliffe), of The Counting House, Nether Shatton, Bamford, Derbyshire, and formerly of 20, Byron Road, Sheffield, Yorkshire. Associated with Sun Mills at Moses Gate, Farnworth. Joined the Manchester University Officer Training Corps in January 1916 and commissioned 25/10/1916. Severely wounded at Hebuterne early 1917. Killed at Givenchy, near La Bassee.
