Previously enlisted as Private 20903, 15th Bn., Welsh Regiment at Bolton on 07/04/1915, and discharged as not likely to become an efficient soldier 23/06/1915. Re-enlisted August 1915 into the 3rd/5th Bn., Loyal North Lancashire Regiment and transferred to the King’s Own Royal Lancaster Regiment. Wounded 08/08/1916.
