Formerly employed by the London and North Western Railway Company as a Junior Train Reporter at Preston, Lancashire. Mobilised 28/02/1917 to 3rd Bn., Loyal North Lancashire Regiment, and subsequently transferred to 10th Bn., and finally to 1st/5th Bn.

Enlisted 1st Bn., Loyal North Lancashire Regiment. Transferred for a time whilst recovering from sickness to the 2nd Garrison Bn, Suffolk Regiment. as Private 35933. Resumed duties with Loyal North Lancashire Regiment and promoted. Posted missing 30/11/1917 and subsequently presumed killed.
