Son of Mr. Robert Thorley Johnson, former headmaster of the Rivington and Blackrod Grammar School, and Mrs. Lilian Johnson, of Gloucestershire, later of “Yalta”, King’s Road, Colwyn Bay. His brother H. Norman Johnson was wounded, shot through the knee, in the Dardanelles.
