Previous territorial service as Gunner 1446, in the 3rd East Lancashire Brigade, Royal Field Artillery, enlisted 06/01/1915 at Bolton and discharged 25/06/1915. Re-enlisted in Loyal North Lancashire Regiment and discharged due to valvular disease of the heart. Died in Bolton aged 20 years on 16/11/1916 and interred in Bolton (Heaton) Cemetery on 18/11/1916
