Originally enlisted as Private 20946 when only 15 years of age on 13/04/1915 in the 15th Bn., Royal Welsh Fusiliers and discharged 21/05/1915 as not likely to become an efficient soldier. Enlisted again 24/05/1915 Private 19264, South Lancashire Regiment. Previously wounded in the knee during the Somme battle. Wounded with poisoning a second time by a gas shell.
