Whittle, Herbert (Bert) –

Son of Mr. and Mrs. Whittle, of 17, Crescent Road, Great Lever, Bolton, Lancashire; husband of Hilda Whittle, of 23, Genesee Street, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Previously served 3 years in the 3rd East Lancashire Brigade, Royal Field Artillery, and worked at Walker’s Tannery. Killed by a bursting shell.

Wild, Jervis –

Son of Margaret Wild, of 14, Highfield Road, Smithills, Bolton, Lancashire, and the late John Wild. Died at No.3 Stationary Hospital, Rouen, from gunshot wounds to left leg.

Wilkinson, William Henry –

Husband of Mrs. Wilkinson, of 108, Peel Street, Farnworth, Lancashire. Previously served eight years as a regular and six as a reservist in the Cheshire Regiment before emigrating to Canada. Discharged 26/01/1917 suffering from Gas Poisoning. Lately resided at 108, Peel Street, Farnworth, Lancashire. Next of kin listed as Susan Wilkinson, of 12, Duke Street, St. Helens, Lancashire. Died from consumption following two operations of the effects of gas. Interred 25/03/1918 in Farnworth Cemetery. Recorded as W N Wilkinson in F&WJ.

Willder, James E –

Son of James and Mary Willder; husband of Elsie Willder, of Bolton, Lancashire.

Williams, Maurice –

Son of Peter Thomas and Ellen Williams, of 18, Peel Street, Farnworth, Lancashire. Formerly employed by the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Company before leaving for Canada in 1912 to take up farming. Died in No.4 Canadian Field Ambulance in France from a gunshot wound in the abdomen and a shrapnel wound in the right leg caused by a bomb dropped by an enemy aeroplane during the night. Memorial in Farnworth Cemetery.

Willoughby, William –

Youngest son of Mrs. Barbara Willoughby, of 75, Park Avenue, Tonge, Bolton, Lancashire and of the late Police Inspector Willoughby, formerly of Bromley Cross, Turton, Lancashire. An old boy of Bolton Municipal Secondary School.

Wilson, Joseph Thomas –

Caught as an absentee from the Canadian Convalescent Home, Workingham since 15/01/1917 appearing before Bolton Magistrates 23/01/1917 to be sent back to his unit under escort. (Bolton Archives: JBO/1/27).

Wilson, Samuel –

Son of the late William Wilson; husband of Nellie Wilson, of 54, Harvey Street, Halliwell, Bolton, Lancashire (CWGC), and formerly of 146, Worsley Road, Farnworth, Lancashire. Canadian records indicate father John Wilson, of Swinton, Lancashire. Killed by gunshot wound to the head.

Son of Alice Winter, of 45, West Hill, Highgate, London, England, and the late William Ralph Winter. Subsequently married his brother’s widow, Florence Edith Winter (nee Philpott), of 213, Darling Street, Brantford, Ontario, Canada. Formerly of the Crowthorn National Childrens Home, Edgworth, Turton, Lancashire.

Winter, Walter –

Son of Alice Winter, of 45, West Hill, Highgate, London, England, and the late William Ralph Winter; husband of Florence Edith Winter (nee Philpott), of 213, Darling Street, Brantford, Ontario, Canada. Formerly of the Crowthorn National Childrens Home, Edgworth, Turton, Lancashire. Admitted to the West General Hospital, Cardiff with gunshot wound to left eye and having been gassed. Died from pneumonia and emphysema at Toronto General Hospital.

Son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Charles Woods, of 32, Fleet Street, Bolton, Lancashire; husband of Rebecca Marshall (formerly Woods), of 5, West Barney Street, Baltimore, Maryland, U.S.A.

Woods, George –

Son of Thomas and Polly Woods, of 25, Oxford Grove, Bolton, Lancashire; husband of Ellen Woods, of 45, Strachan Street East, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Served four years with the Bolton Volunteers before emigrating to Canada. Died at No.20 General Hospital, Camiers, from gunshot wounds to abdomen received 21/02/1917.

Worrall, Squire –

Son of James Edward and Jane Worrall, of 124, Bury Old Road, Bolton, Lancashire; husband of Amelia Hannah Worrall, of 95, Carlaw Avenue, Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Died of shrapnel wounds to the face and shoulder at No.13 Stationary Hospital, Boulogne.

Worsley, Thomas –

Son of William and Matilda Worsley, of 77, Snowden Street, Bolton, Lancashire, and later of 152, Chorley Old Road, Bolton, Lancashire. Reported missing and subsequently presumed killed.

Yates, Thomas –

Son of Joseph and the late Katherine Yates of 454, Liverpool Street, Salford, Lancashire.

Young, Robert John –

Husband of Catherine Young, of 74 Garnet Avenue, Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and later of 187, Bloor Street East, Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Formerly employed by the Bolton Corporation Waterworks Department prior to emigrating to Canada. Died after being hit by a shell splinter.
