Wounded by shrapnel in left foot and discharged 19/12/1914 as no longer physically fit for war service. Appeared before Bolton Magistrates Court aged 22 on 17/06/1915 as a discharged soldier for having been drunk and disorderly in Churchgate on 16/06/1915. (Bolton Archives: JBO/1/26). Re-enlisted and discharged. Subsequently re-enlisted in the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment, September 1915.
