Son of John William Smith, the postmaster for Little Lever, and Annie Smith, of 58, Market Street, Little Lever. A Lewis gunner. Wounded aged 31 in the head, back and stomach when a parapet collapsed 19/09/1917.

Youngest son of Joseph and Emma Smith, of 108, Davenport Street, Bolton, Lancashire. An old boy of the Bolton Church Institute. Commissioned second lieutenant 24/12/1914 with the Royal Welsh Fusiliers. Wounded 05/07/1915 whilst attached 2nd Bn., Royal Welsh Fusiliers. Transferred to the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment. Wounded and captured prisoner of war 26/02/1917, and died of wounds the following day. His wounds were described as right arm torn away, right leg shattered and a wound in the left leg.

Formerly on the staff of Messrs. Tillotson and Sons, Ltd. Enlisted January 1915 into the King’s Royal Rifle Corps as Rifleman 9490. Wounded January 1916 at Ypres. Commissioned August 1917. Reported missing since 18/04/1918 and subsequently confirmed prisoner of war in Germany.
