Son of Thomas Edward Smith, J.P. and Ellen Smith, of Dun Withins, Chorley New Road, Heaton, Bolton, Lancashire. An old boy of Bolton Grammar School. Promoted to Lieutenant from Second Lieutenant, 02/09/1914. Served as acting Lieutenant Colonel commanding a battalion of the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment until 31/07/1917. Wounded in the right arm on 31/07/1917.
