He originally enlisted on 23/05/1915 in the 7th Bn., Manchester Regiment but was discovered to be under age during training. He promptly re-enlisted the following day after being discharged, claiming to be 19 years old although aged only 13, and spent his 14th birthday in France. At this time he was 5’8″ tall. He spent four months in the trenches before again being discharged 20/05/1916.
