Eldest son of Joseph and Elizabeth Aldred, of 151, Bury Old Road, Haulgh, Bolton, Lancashire. Commissioned March 1918, Second Lieutenant, Royal Flying Corps. Seriously wounded 07/09/1918 and died of wounds at hospital at Rouen.

Anson, John Charles –

Son of Sarah Alice Kearsley (formerly Anson), of 29, Tempest Street, Daubhill, Bolton, Lancashire; husband of Mrs. Anson, of 84, Minerva Street, Bolton, Lancashire. Reported missing August 1916 and subsequently presumed killed.

Ballard, Alfred –

Son of Edward and Susannah Ballard, of 11, Boundary Street, Bolton, Lancashire. A reservist who had previously served eight years in the Army and four on the reserve, with much time in India and Egypt. A postman in Bolton before his war service, and a member of St. George’s Road Congregational Church.

Bibby, Robert –

Son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Bibby, of 85, Deane Road, Bolton, Lancashire, and formerly of 50, Edward Street, Bolton, Lancashire. Reported as wounded and missing since 31/07/1917 and subsequently presumed killed.

Birch, Harold –

Son of Thomas Edward Birch; husband of Nellie Birch, of 34, Wapping Street, Halliwell, Bolton, Lancashire, and formerly of 55, Churchgate, Bolton, Lancashire. Caught aged 20 as a deserter from Hullavington, Wiltshire since 10/10/1914 appearing before Bolton Magistrates 20/10/1914 to be sent back to his unit under escort. (Bolton Archives: JBO/1/25). Formerly Private 1448, 5th Bn., Loyal North Lancashire Regiment.

Son of John and Martha Jane Birch (nee Nuttall), of 37, Windley Street, Bolton, Lancashire. His brother Peter also died in service.

Birch, Peter –

Son of John and Martha Jane Birch (nee Nuttall), of 37, Windley Street, Bolton, Lancashire; husband of Sarah Ellen Birch, of 14, Ann Street, Folds Road, Bolton, Lancashire. Lost with his ship at the Battle of Jutland. His brother John also fell. Body not recovered for burial.

Son of Samuel and Alice Birchenough; husband of Mary Birchenough, of 6, Scarborough Street, Bolton, Lancashire, and formerly of 18, Shuttle Street, Bolton, Lancashire. Enlisted July 1915.

Husband of Priscilla Bond, of Brookfield Cottage, Tonge Bridge, Bolton, Lancashire. Enlisted November 1915, “Group System”. Enlisted September 1916.

Son of Albert and Margaret Bullough, of 137, Bradford Street, Bolton, Lancashire.

Carey, Alfred –

Son of John Thomas and Maria Carey (nee Heaviside), of 17, All Saints Street, Bolton, Lancashire. Received a penetrating gunshot wound to the head at Gallipoli, and transferred “dangerously ill” to hospital at Alexandria, Egypt.

Carter, John Edwin –

Son of John Thomas and Hannah Maria Carter (nee Wade), of 71, Tonge Park Avenue, Bolton, Lancashire. Formerly employed by the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Company as a Clerk. Lost with the torpedoed troopship Royal Edward at Gallipoli.

Son of Mr. and Mrs. Cartman, of 108, Bury New Road, Bolton, Lancashire; husband of Emily Cartman, of 185, Radcliffe Road, Darcy Lever, Bolton, Lancashire.

Chapman, Alfred Reginald Bewes –

Eldest son of Thomas Alfred Chapman, Bishop of Colchester, and Catherine Mary Chapman, of Derby House, Colchester, Essex. Formerly of The Vicarage, Bolton, Lancashire. Educated at Plymouth College, Rossall and St. John’s College, Cambridge. Gazetted, August, 1914. Promoted 02/09/1914 to Second Lieutenant. Slightly wounded in the head around 20/06/1915. Wounded again 03/08/1915.

Chapman, Cecil Austin Bewes –

Son of Thomas Alfred Chapman, Bishop of Colchester, and Catherine Mary Chapman, of Derby House, Colchester, Essex. Formerly of The Vicarage, Bolton, Lancashire. Died aged 17 at Bolton in 1918.

Clayton, Norman –

Son of John Thomas and Mary Elizabeth Clayton, of 65, Castle Street, Haulgh, Bolton, Lancashire. An old boy of the Ridgways Endowed School. Enlisted June 1915. Formerly Corporal 5239, 4th/5th Bn., Loyal North Lancashire Regiment; formerly Lance Sergeant 241521, 4th/5th Bn., Loyal North Lancashire Regiment. Promoted from Lance Corporal to Corporal 16/08/1915. Commissioned 30/01/1918, King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. Killed by a shell.

Crawshaw, William Douglas –

Son of William and Gladys Elizabeth Crawshaw, of 19, Deansgate, Bolton, Lancashire. A wireless telegraphist, presumed drowned at sea while in actual naval service when ship sunk.

Son of Alfred and Eleanor Crompton, of 24, Simpson Street, Bolton, Lancashire. Formerly worked for the Bolton Chronicle. Two brothers also served.
