Simpson, Charles –

Son of John Thomas and Mary Simpson, of 47, Cemetery Road, Tonge, Bolton, Lancashire. Died at Canterbury Hospital from peritonitis following upon an operation for appendicitis. Mistakenly reported as “W Simpton” in BJ&G.

Son of William Slater, of 20, Clarendon Road, Bolton, Lancashire.

Smethurst, William –

Son of Mr. and Mrs. William Smethurst, of 51, Brookfield Street, Bolton, Lancashire. Fought at the Somme, Arras, and High Wood battles. Succumbed to a shrapnel wound in the left arm.

Son of James Heald Smith and Olwen Smith, of Bolton, Lancashire. Attached 5th Battalion, Sherwood Foresters, Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment.

Steele, James Ibison –

Son of Joseph and Margaret Steele; husband of Bessie Murphy (formerly Steele), of 6, Skipton Street, Tonge, Bolton, Lancashire. Served in the South African Campaign with the King’s Liverpool Regiment, with whom he served eight years.

Son of Robert P. and Mary J. Tennant, of 7, Brookfield Street, Tonge, Bolton, Lancashire. Enlisted April 1915. Formerly 07561, Royal Army Ordnance Corps.

Son of James and Mary Wadeson, of Bolton, Lancashire; husband of Ethel Wadeson, of Tonge Bridge, Bolton, Lancashire. Formerly Manchester Regiment.

Walmsley, Robert –

Son of Susannah Walmsley, of 318, Bury Road, Breightmet, Bolton, Lancashire, and formerly of 163, Arnold Street, Bolton, Lancashire. Formerly a manager of the Tonge Fold branch of the Bolton Co-Operative Society’s boot and shoe department. Formerly Private 8026, Loyal North Lancashire Regiment.

Winterbottom, James –

Son of William and Sarah Ellen Winterbottom, of 21, Colenso Road, Tonge Fold, Bolton, Lancashire. Mobilised as a Territorial August 1914. Formerly Private 1988, 1st/5th Bn., Loyal North Lancashire Regiment. Reported wounded and missing since 30/11/1917, and subsequently presumed killed. His father William served with the Royal Defence Corps. A brother William was prisoner of war in Hanover, Germany.

Wood, Reuben –

Of 5, Hengist Street, Bolton, Lancashire. Caught as an absentee from Blackpool since 15/01/1917 appearing before Bolton Magistrates 22/01/1917 to be sent back to his unit under escort. (Bolton Archives: JBO/1/27). Formerly 10th Bn., Loyal North Lancashire Regiment.

Son of John Thomas and Hannah Stanley Wright, of 85, Bury New Road, Haulgh, Bolton, Lancashire. Died at Frodsham Auxiliary Military Hospital, Cheshire.
