Enlisted aged 17 and served in the South African Campaign receiving both the King’s and the Queen’s Medals. Called up as a reservist in 1914, and fought at Le Cateau, Marne, Aisne, Lys, St. Yoes, Pilkern, Shell Trap Farm, Gravenstafel, Ypres, Ploegsteert Wood, and Le Ghen up to June 1916.
