Previously served 1 year and 10 months in 3rd East ancashire Brigade., RFA, 1911-1912. While doing duty as a Lewis Gunner in No.16 Platoon, and shortly after leaving the “jumping off” thench on the Vis-en-Artois Line, about 5.15 on the morning of 02/09/1918, he was hit in the body by shrapnel and died almost immediately.
