He lived with his sister Gertrude Richardson at 32 Vere Street, Salford, Lancashire. Walter had four brothers Tom, Fred, Harry and Charles and two sisters Annie and Gertrude. Walter was burnt to death when a candle was knocked over in his tent while he was asleep.
