Previously Private 11192, 6th Bn., Loyal North Lancashire Regiment. Caught aged 28 as a deserter from Tidsworth since 13/10/1914 appearing before Bolton Magistrates 24/10/1914 to be sent back to his unit under escort. (Bolton Archives: JBO/1/25). Re-enlisted December 1914. Caught aged 29 as an absentee from The Castle, Carlisle since 06/01/1915 appearing before Bolton Magistrates 08/01/1915 to be sent back to his unit under escort. (Bolton Archives: JBO/1/25). Formerly well known locally as a wrestler and weight lifter.
