Enlisted October 1914 as Private 3439, 7th Bn., Manchester Regiment. Served in the Dardanelles and invalided home with dysentery. On recovery transferred to the Special Brigade, Royal Engineers, as Pioneer 129929. Commissioned 25/06/1918
