Enlisted at Bolton on 16/04/1915 as Private 18306 in the South Lancashire Regiment with declared age 19 years and 180 days and discharged as not likely to become an efficient soldier 21/05/1915. Re-enlisted at Bolton in May 1915 in the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment, and presumably again discharged. Re-enlisted again at Bolton 21/06/1915 as Private 22079, 3rd Bn., Border Regiment with age declared as 19 years and 120 days but discharged at Conway for having made a mis-statement as to age on enlistment 25/02/1916. Caught aged 18 as Private 397233 as an absentee from Motor Transport, Royal Army Service Corps at Beckenham, Kent since 02/06/1918 and from 6th Bn., Middlesex Regiment at Chatham since 18/11/1918 appearing before Bolton Magistrates 10/06/1918 and 25/11/1918 to be sent back to his unit under escort.
