Previously served as Company Sergeant Major Hugh MATTHEWS, 3993, 1st Bn., Loyal North Lancashire Regiment, having enlisted at Liverpool 28/05/1893. Served in the East Indies, Ceylon, and the South African Campaign. He corrected his records to Hugh HERBERT during service. Discharged 27/05/1914 as time expired after 21 years service. Re-enlisted giving address as Fletcher Street Barracks in June 1914 as Company Sergeant Major 2043, 5th Bn., Loyal North Lancashire Regiment. Twice wounded in 1916. Discharged 27/05/1919 totalling 26 years service. Died aged 82 years at 2 Longworth Bank, Edgworth, Lancashire on 21/01/1950 having resided at The Range Headquarters, Edgworth.
