Hirst, Herbert –

Second son of Ralph Greensmith and Mrs Hirst, of Kendlemere, Lever Edge Lane, Bolton, Lancashire. First enlisted as Air Mechanic Second Class 13370, Royal Flying Corps, and was discharged as not approved 11/11/1915 due to an injury to his leg. Rejoined in 02/03/1916 and transferred to become an officer cadet May 1917, commissioned in August 1917. Wounded 20/10/1917 whilst returning from a bombing mission and treated at the Prince of Wales’ Hospital for officers at Marylebone, London.
