Previously served as Corporal 3182, Lancashire Fusiliers, in the South African Campaign, having enlisted 06/05/1897 at Bury, Lancashire, and discharged 05/05/1903 as time-expired. Wounded through mustard gas 1917. Joined Royal Flying Corps 11/01/1918 and transferred to Royal Air Force on formation 01/04/1918.
