An old soldier, having served 7 years with the Border Regiment., and five years on the reserve, volunteered for active service immediately war broke out. Previously gassed twice, at Loos and on the Somme and wounded once. Mistakenly reported in Bolton Journal and Guardian as Sergeant and also as Sergeant J. Maypole.
