Previously served as Ordinary Seaman SS/3957 (Dev.), Royal Navy, from 15/05/1912 to 22/06/1912 – purchased discharge. Employed at the Chloride Works in Clifton prior to enlistment. Wounded 21/05/1916 at Vimy Ridge, and again 10/07/1916 on the Somme and convalescent at Blackpool. Also gassed at Ypres 05/09/1917, and wounded 10/04/1918.
