Caught aged 21 as an absentee from HMS Falmouth at Newcastle since 06/04/1915 appearing before Bolton Magistrates 09/04/1915 to be sent back to his ship under escort. Discharged from Naval service 06/12/1915. Later joined the Highland Light Infantry as Private 4272. Caught as an absentee fron Danbury, Essex since 09/07/1916, and from France since 22/01/1918.
