Caught aged 20 as an absentee from France since 04/12/1917 appearing before Bolton Magistrates 09/12/1918 to be sent back to his unit under escort. Also appeared whilst stationed at Barry Dock before Bolton Magistrates 09/12/1918 charged with theft of property to a value of 12.5/0 from Percy Thornley of the Flag Hotel, Great Moor Street, Bolton on 06/12/1918, and also with falsely wearing a uniform and decoration to which not entitled on 07/12/1918. Remanded to 12/12/1918 and further adjourned to 14/12/1918. Sentenced to 6 months imprisonment with hard labour. (Bolton Archives: JBO/1/29).
