Youngest son of Joseph and Emma Smith, of 108, Davenport Street, Bolton, Lancashire. An old boy of the Bolton Church Institute. Commissioned second lieutenant 24/12/1914 with the Royal Welsh Fusiliers. Wounded 05/07/1915 whilst attached 2nd Bn., Royal Welsh Fusiliers. Transferred to the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment. Wounded and captured prisoner of war 26/02/1917, and died of wounds the following day. His wounds were described as right arm torn away, right leg shattered and a wound in the left leg.
