Born as Herbert Ainscow Kelly. Son of William Edward and Elizabeth Summerton (nee Kelly), of 14, Portland Street, Farnworth, Lancashire, and formerly of 17, Bentinck Street, Farnworth, Lancashire. Formerly 8277, 1st Bn., Scots Guards; formerly Private 23543, 3rd and 2nd Bns., Loyal North Lancashire Regiment. Wounded and brought home for hospital treatment August 1914. Discharged and re-enlisted following recovery. Caught as an absentee July 1917 and returned to his unit under escort. Formerly 1st/5th Bn., Loyal North Lancashire Regiment. Posted missing since 30/11/1917 and interned prisoner of war at Dulmen.
