Caught as an absentee aged 45 from St. Anne’s Street Barracks, Liverpool since 26/06/1915 and again since 09/07/1915 appearing before Bolton Magistrates 01/07/1915, and again on 12/07/1915, also charged with assault on PC 120 Crompton in Salford Road on 09/07/1915. Son of Mr. and Mrs. Bruno Whittle, of 34, Queen Street, Farnworth, Lancashire. Formerly 2460, 2nd/1st Lancashire Hussars, which he joined aged 18.

Wilcox, Charles Ernest –

Son of Margaret Emily Wilcox (nee Walsh), of of 163, Mayor Street, Bolton, Lancashire, and the late Mark Wilcox. Severely wounded in the head and died at No.12 Casualty Clearing Station without recovering consciousness. Surname sometimes recorded as WILLCOX

Wilkes, Herbert Edwin –

Son of Herbert and Eliza Jane Wilkes, of 173, Deane Church Lane, Bolton, Lancashire. Gave a pint and half of his blood to save the life of a wounded comrade who was too weak to undergo surgery to amputate his left arm.

Wilkinson, Herbert –

Son of Mrs. Wilkinson, of 1, Mount Pleasant, Ringlow Park Road, Swinton, Lancashire. Reported missing since a large engagement 24/03/1918. A comrade reported him wounded in the leg and unable to walk. Subsequently confirmed prisoner of war in Germany.
