Whilst serving guarding the railway line at Mangotsfield, Gloucestershire, Matthew was accidentally killed by his brother Private William Crook, 5th Bn., Loyal North Lancashire Regiment, when a rifle William was handling discharged accidentally. One of two female friends being entertained by the brothers at the time was also wounded.

Re-enlisted in the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment at Bolton claiming to be 19 years and six months old, but was in fact only 16.

One of two female friends being entertained by the brothers at the time was also wounded. He was tried at the Gloucester Assizes for manslaughter but found not guilty and the case dismissed.
