Son of James and Elizabeth Crook, of 7, Irma Street, Astley Bridge, Bolton, Lancashire. Whilst serving guarding the railway line at Mangotsfield, Gloucestershire, Matthew was accidentally killed by his brother Private William Crook, 5th Bn., Loyal North Lancashire Regiment, when a rifle William was handling discharged accidentally. One of two female friends being entertained by the brothers at the time was also wounded.
