Previously enlisted at Bolton on 31/03/1915 as Private 4151, 2nd/5th Bn., Loyal North Lancashire Regiment, and discharged 13/08/1915. Re-enlisted 20/09/1915 at Bolton as Driver 2336, 3rd East Lancashire Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. Both times discharged for having made a mis-statement as to age on enlistment. He had claimed to be 19 years old.
