Worked in the Goods Office of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Company at Bolton. Joined the 5th Bn., Loyal North Lancashire Regiment in May 1914 and was training to be a despatch rider at outbreak of war. Became Company Quartermaster Sergeant before he was 18.
