Previously enlisted at Bolton on 13/08/1914 as Private 1883, Army Pay Corps and stationed at Hamilton from where he was declared a deserter 03/05/1915. Re-enlisted as a despatch rider, he was thrown from his motorcycle and suffered head wounds and a fractured leg through being run over by a transport wagon and treated at County of Middlesex War Hospital.
