Brown (Metcalfe), William –

NOTE:- Also known as William METCALFE. Of 85, Ordnance Street, Blackburn, Lancashire. Caught aged 32 as an absentee from Birkenhead since 15/01/1916 appearing before Bolton Magistrates 25/01/1916 to be sent back to his ship under escort. (Bolton Archives: JBO/1/26).

Of St. Augustine’s School House, Tonge Moor, Bolton, Lancashire. Saw service in the South African Campaign and the Battle of Jutland.

Burgess (Shufflebotham), Harold (Burgess) –

NOTE: Alias SHUFFLEBOTHAM. Husband of Ivy Emmeline Brant (formerly Burgess), of The Green, Castle Street, Portchester, Fareham, Hampshire. An old boy of Bolton Municipal Secondary School. Formerly served as Petty Officer 226391 (Po.) on HMS Vulcan. Died of pneumonia.

Casstles, George –

Son of Thomas and Mary Ann Casstles, of 23, Mona Street, Bolton, Lancashire. Joined the Navy at 17 years of age.

Chadwick, John William –

Of Astley Bridge, Bolton, Lancashire. A member of the Bolton Division of the St. John Ambulance Brigade.

Chappell, Robert –

Son of Mrs. Chappell, of Leicester Street, Bolton, Lancashire; husband of Mrs. Chappell, of 173, Agincourt Road, Portsmouth, Hampshire. Resided at 61, Palmerston Street, Bolton, Lancashire. 15 years service in the Royal Navy.

Charlton, Thomas –

Son of Mrs. J. Williams, of 33, Longfield Road, Daubhill, Bolton, Lancashire. Was on the minesweeper Arabis when she was sunk on 10/02/1916. Previously served on HMS Powerful, HMS Impregnable and HMS Victory. Captured Prisoner of War.
