Grandson of Mrs. Barrow, of 49, Bentinck Street, Moses Gate, Farnworth, Lancashire. Enlisted October 1915.

Barwise, George –

Son of Ellen Barwise, of 109, King Street, Farnworth, Lancashire, and the late Thomas Barwise. Enlisted January 1915. Wounded October 1917, returning to the front 27/04/1918.

Barwise, Harold –

Son of Ellen Barwise, of 109, King Street, Farnworth, Lancashire, and the late Thomas Barwise. Enlisted May 1917. Formerly 35808, East Surrey Regiment. Reported missing 17/04/1918, reported prisoner of war in letter of August 1918. When not returned following the Armistice, the Red Cross discovered he had died from ‘bodily weakness and heart disease’ and been interred in a hospital cemetery at Erquelinnes.

Son of Mr. J. T. Bates, of 94, Harrowby Street, Farnworth, Lancashire; brother of Simeon Bates, of 37, Bentinck Street, Moses Gate, Farnworth, Lancashire. Formerly 2142, Loyal North Lancashire Regiment. Reported missing and possible prisoner, but subsequently presumed killed.

Battersby, Walter –

Son of Andrew and Lydia Battersby, of 6, Antelope Street, Kearsley, Lancashire; husband of Mrs. Battersby, of 1, Rutter Street, Kearsley, Lancashire. Joined up November 1917. Died of wounds in a casualty clearing station in France, having been severely wounded in the legs.

Son of Andrew and Lydia Battersby, of 6, Antelope Street, Kearsley, Lancashire. Formerly 1403 / 710574, 1/3 East Lancashire Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. Transferred to Royal Garrison Artillery 19/02/1918. Wounded by gunshot to right lung, September 1915 at Gallipoli.

Bennett, Reginald George –

Son of Rev. George Bennett of the Skelmersdale Congregational Church; nephew of Thomas and Charlotte Clare, of 28, Worsley Road, Farnworth, Lancashire. Commissioned from the ranks 1916. Killed leading his men in action near Poelcapelle.

Son of Philip and Elizabeth Bennett, of 33, Alma Street, Guelph, Ontario, Canada. Aunt resided at Ellesmere Street, Farnworth, Lancashire. Killed by enemy shrapnel during operations at Sanctuary Wood.

Formerly 3rd Bn., Loyal North Lancashire Regiment. Caught on multiple occasions as an absentee from his units and appeared each time before Bolton Magistrates to be sent back to his units under escort. (Bolton Archives: JBO/1/26 & JBO/1/27). Son of Squire and Mary Alice Bentham, of 18, St. James Street, New Bury, Farnworth, Lancashire. Formerly worked as a conductor on the South Lancashire Tramways. Enlisted September 1914. Attached 9th Bn., Loyal North Lancashire Regiment. Died in hospital in France from appendicitis and pneumonia. Memorial in Farnworth (St. John’s) Churchyard.

An old boy of the Hollands School. Born Farnworth, Lancashire. Wounded multiple times. Formerly 5th Bn., Rifle Brigade. Reported locally to have been awarded the DCM, but no evidence currently found of this award.
