Barlow, Thomas (Tom) –

Son of Frances Barlow, of 109A, Lorne Street, Farnworth, Lancashire, and the late William Barlow. An old boy of the Bolton Church Institute (1896). Enlisted February 1915. Memorial in St. Michael’s Great Lever Churchyard.

Son of Louisa Barnaby, of 3, Worsley Road, Farnworth, Lancashire, and the late William Barnaby, and formerly of 112, Bridgewater Road, Walkden, Lancashire; husband of Blanche Barnaby (nee Lever).

Barnes, William –

Husband of Mrs. Barnes, of 83, Albert Road, Farnworth, Lancashire. Enlisted January 1915. Was gassed two nights in succession in July 1915 and recovered after treatment in a Canadian field hospital. Memorial in Farnworth Cemetery.

Son of Henry and Alice Barnes, of 63, Leach Street, Farnworth, Lancashire; husband of Annie Mason (formerly Barnes), of Jesmond Estate, Drury, Auckland, New Zealand.

Barnes, Henry –

Of 2, Almond Street, Farnworth, Lancashire. Formerly 13105, Somerset Light Infantry. Wounded at Sulva Bay, Gallipoli 15/08/1915. Was on guard duty at Dublin Castle during the Irish Unrest.

Barnes, James Francis –

Son of Henry and Alice Barnes, of 63, Leach Street, Farnworth, Lancashire; husband of Mrs. Barnes, of 29, Ash Street, Moses Gate, Farnworth, and later of Trafford Grove. Died of wounds when there was an air attack on the clearing hospital he was in.

Barnett, George Thomas –

Son of Mr. and Mrs. George Barnetet, of 18, Hill Field, New Bury, Farnworth, Lancashire. Enlisted April 1917 aged 19. Wounded by shrapnel in the right foot June 1918. Killed instantly by a shell.

Barrow, Stanley –

Grandson of Mrs. Barrow, of 49, Bentinck Street, Moses Gate, Farnworth, Lancashire. Enlisted October 1915.

Barwise, Harold –

Son of Ellen Barwise, of 109, King Street, Farnworth, Lancashire, and the late Thomas Barwise. Enlisted May 1917. Formerly 35808, East Surrey Regiment. Reported missing 17/04/1918, reported prisoner of war in letter of August 1918. When not returned following the Armistice, the Red Cross discovered he had died from ‘bodily weakness and heart disease’ and been interred in a hospital cemetery at Erquelinnes.

Son of Mr. J. T. Bates, of 94, Harrowby Street, Farnworth, Lancashire; brother of Simeon Bates, of 37, Bentinck Street, Moses Gate, Farnworth, Lancashire. Formerly 2142, Loyal North Lancashire Regiment. Reported missing and possible prisoner, but subsequently presumed killed.

Eldest son of William and Elizabeth Baxendale, of 8, South Street, Farnworth, Lancashire. Formerly Royal Fusiliers, enlisted June 1917.

Bennett, Samuel –

Son of Philip and Elizabeth Bennett, of 33, Alma Street, Guelph, Ontario, Canada. Aunt resided at Ellesmere Street, Farnworth, Lancashire. Killed by enemy shrapnel during operations at Sanctuary Wood.

Son of William Bennett, of Manchester, Lancashire; husband of Mrs. Mary Ellen Kelly (formerly Bennett), of 16, Annie Street, Great Lever, Bolton, Lancashire. Formerly of 43, Victoria Street, Moses Gate, Farnworth, Lancashire; 10, Gleave Street, Bolton, Lancashire; and 14, Back All Saints Street, Bolton, Lancashire. Formerly 3rd Bn., Loyal North Lancashire Regiment. Caught on multiple occasions as an absentee from his units and appeared each time before Bolton Magistrates to be sent back to his units under escort. (Bolton Archives: JBO/1/26 & JBO/1/27).
